Roger Norum is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oulu, Finland. He is deputy director of the Profi6 Biodiverse Anthropocenes research programme, co-director of Environmental Humanities and co-founder of the Finnish Association of Citizen Sciences. Roger has the disciplinary experience that spans geography, cultural studies, media studies and the environmental humanities. His transdisciplinary research considers links between infrastructure, mobility and the environment, with a focus on the comparative and praxeological dimensions of participatory media, mapping and mobility, primarily among transient communities in the Arctic and Asia. His doctoral work, based on field research among Euro-American mobile professionals working in Kathmandu, Nepal, took as its core focus the production of hypersociality as a response to experiences of transience and neo-colonial privilege. He currently leads several international projects on conservation, tourism, and sensory ethnography, and is carrying out research on topics that include: the experience of silence in the European High North; the social lives of mosquitoes in Finland and Alaska; and ecological socialities among Chinese tourists and migrants in Cambodian special economic zones. He is co-author of the monograph Migrantes (Ekaré, 2019) and co-editor of Geopolitics and Tourism: Assemblages of Power, Mobility and the State (Arizona UP, 2021), Anthropocene Ecologies: Entanglements of Tourism, Nature and Imagination (Routledge, 2020), Methodologies of Mobility: Ethnography and Experiment (Berghahn, 2017) and Political Ecology of Tourism: Communities, Power and the Environment (Routledge, 2016). He is also the founding editor of the Palgrave book series Arctic Encounters, and sits on the editorial boards of the journals Digital, Culture and Society, Teaching Anthropology and Time and Mind. Since 2015 has been awarded over 19.2MM EUR in research and programme funding, either as PI or Co-I. He has given academic talks in several languages, including Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish. Roger received degrees from Cornell University and the University of Oxford and holds a docentship in mobility from the University of Oulu.
